Into the Woods
(Apr 9 - May 23)
A Sondheim classic, Into the Woods blends familiar fairy tales with the story of a childless Baker and his Wife, who are attempting to reverse a curse on their family in order to have a child.
In the first act, characters find "Happily Ever After" through familiar routes - Cinderella goes to the ball to meet Prince Charming, Jack climbs the beanstalk and finds gold, Little Red Riding Hood survives her clash with the wolf, and Rapunzel manages to escape her tower. The Baker and his Wife move through their stories while pursuing the ingredients needed to help the old and ugly witch, the requirement for lifting the curse she placed on them.
Act Two deals with the consequences that fairy tales often ignore. What does one do with a dead giant in the backyard? Does marrying a Prince really lead to bliss? Is carving up the wolf the solution? Is the giant always wrong? In Act Two, all the characters must deal with what happens AFTER "Happily Ever After".
Note: With the much lighter first act followed by the darker-humored second act, it has become almost a bizarre tradition in theatres across the nation for families to bring their children, enjoy the substantial first act, and then give the theater a happy "thanks and see you next time!" while leaving the second act to more mature audiences. Feel free to speak to our box office for more details about content.
